Moonflower Enterprises was created many years ago in Guatemala, while sitting around an open hearth fire, on a reed mat, listening to a Mayan family share their experiences and struggles to survive, amidst widespread violence and chaos. Along with the language and other deep-rooted Mayan traditions, one of the cornerstones of Mayan culture that continues to be consistently practiced despite numerous invasions, strains of disease, cycles of social displacement and even genocide, is the Weaving. For over two millena, Mayan weavings have communicated their artistic expressions in a language dominated by vibrant colors and ancient symbology
The Moonflower Enterprises vision was formulated by Felipe in 1985, while on a journey through out the Americas, to get in touch with his native roots and reclaim his heritage.
From 1985 to 2001, Moonflower Enterprises exported and marketed Guatemalan textiles, weavings, and crafts to select markets in central Texas. During this period, casual relationships with Mayan artisans developed into long-term business relationships and intimate friendships. Although many textiles and crafts made their way into the homes of many conscientous and supportive families, Moonflower Enterprises growth was limited as it was difficult to market Mayan-made products in the USA while living in Guatemala.
In the year 2000, Felipe recognized that in order for Moonflower Enterprises to succeed, North American and global markets needed to be developed taking advantage of the wealth of resouces and capital available in the USA.
Moonflower Enterprises was legally organized in December 2001, six months after Felipe returned to the USA after having lived and worked among the Maya in Guatemala for 16 years. Since then, Moonflower Enterprises has continued to grow, evolve and expand; and more importantly, the business has been able to significantly contribute to the family economy of Mayan artisans through sale of their products online, wholesale and at retail venues.
Felipe was joined by his wife, Maria, in 2003 which provided the spirit, energy and direction that that Moonflower Enterprises needed to continue linking a solid network of humble Mayan artisans in the South with a loyal cadre of conscientous consumers in the North.
Everyone plays their part as Moonflower Enterprises weaves a magical and colorful vision of culture, tradition, economic empowerment and heartfelt beauty, from the artisans in Guatemala to the consumers in the USA, and all others in between. Within the inner workings of the Moonflower Enterprises business model, everyone is important, everyone plays their part, everyone benefits. Others like to refer to this as a win-win-win situation. We thank you for playing your part.
